KPBS Kids: Xavier Riddle Craft
Create an airplane just like the one Amelia Earhart flew!
Activity best for children age 3 and up
Who is your hero? This month we traveled back in time with Xavier Riddle and his friends to learn about heroes throughout history. We met a young woman named Amelia Earhart who became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In this craft we will recycle a plastic bottle and turn it into an airplane just like the ones Amelia flew in the story “I Am Amelia Earhart” written by Brad Meltzer.
Materials you’ll need:
Plastic water bottle
Paper
Cardboard
Scissors
Tape or glue
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Directions
STEP 1
Wrap your plastic bottle with a piece of paper and attach it with some tape or glue.
STEP 2
Carefully cut out your wings and rudder from a piece of cardboard. If you would like to create a biplane like Amelia’s yellow Canary, you will need a top and bottom wing.
STEP 3
Attach all your cardboard pieces to the body of your plane using tape or glue.
STEP 4
Add some final details with a drawing tool or some paper scraps.
