STREAM Activity: Giveaway a Rock
What design will you paint on your rock?
Activity best for children ages 2 and up
Our inspiration for the activity comes from the fact that today is “Give Something Away Day”. Throughout their lives people often giveaway certain toys, tools, equipment, clothes, or many other things that they will no longer need. It’s always a good habit to find a new home for your things and give them away to someone else who might need them when you are done. Today we are going to give something away that is a bit different. We are going to make art on a rock and give it away to our community. There is a good chance that we will not see who finds our rock but we know that it will brighten that person’s day.
Materials:
A rock to paint
Paint (Acrylic works best for rocks but is difficult to clean, Tempera is easier to clean but may not last as long)
Paint pallet or paper plate
Guiding Questions:
What color should the main portion of the rock be?
What is a good pattern we could paint on our rock?
Does the shape of the rock look like it could help guide our painting?
Directions
Step 1
Gather all your materials and clean your rocks if they have dirt or dust on them.
Step 2
Give your rock a base coat of paint that will be the main color of the rock.
Step 3
Add in your own design. For dots using the end of the paint brush works well.
Step 4
Let your rocks dry! You don’t want someone to pick them up while they are still wet!
Step 5
Hide your rock where someone may find it if they look hard enough!
