World Culture Activity Video: Italy

Make your own pizza!

Activity best for children age 3 and up

This month we will be exploring a new country as part of our Roots Series sponsored by the Nissan Foundation and the County of San Diego. Each week in August, during World Culture Wednesday, we will be learning a bit more about the cultures of Italy.

Today, we’ll be making pizza! To learn more about Italy and this yummy dish, watch the video below.

Note:

Start a few hours before you’ll need the dough. This recipe will make enough dough for 2 pizzas.

Ingredients:

1 packet of active dry yeast

1 ¼ cup warm water

1 teaspoon white sugar

3 ½ cups flour

2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for covering dough)

1 teaspoon salt

Directions

STEP 1
In  a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

STEP 2
Mix in the flour, salt and oil. When a dough has formed, turn it onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.

STEP 3
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and turn until the ball of dough is covered with oil. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough sit for at least a couple hours.

STEP 4
Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F.

STEP 5
Place dough on a floured surface and divide into 2 halves. Roll each one with a rolling pin or use your hands to stretch the dough into a large circle.

STEP 6
Add your toppings and place on a pizza stone or lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown
