STREAM Activity: International Youth Day- Engagement for Global Action
A few ways you can volunteer in your community!
Activity best for children age 2 and up
Every day we make upwards of 1,000 decisions! These could be as simple as choosing your outfit for the day or even picking what toy you’ll play with next. Every decision we make adds up to how we feel about our day. What if you could do something small but meaningful for your community? Would you do it? Well today, you can try! Today is International Youth Day, a day for kids to focus on making good decisions for ourselves, our communities, and our world.
At San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, we believe children can make a difference in our world. To get you started we are providing a list of activities you can do to help make our world better! Now that you have that list, get out there and make a difference!
Materials you’ll need:
Yourself and your family
Guiding Questions:
How can I help my community?
Am I able to make an impact on the world daily?
How can I get others involved?
Activities
Activity 1
Pick up trash around your yard. Grab a group of close friends in your neighborhood and clean up your street. Maybe even make it a beach day with your family and clean up there.
Activity 2
Remember all those toys you don’t play with anymore? Or what about those clothes that don’t quite fit? Let’s gather them all up and donate them!
You can even donate old books to children’s hospitals.
Activity 3
Make handmade cards for First Responders. Know any firefighters, nurses, or paramedics? They would love to hear something positive from the kids in their community.
Activity 4
Recycle. Recycle as much as possible. Make sure you’re putting the right materials in the blue trash can. You can even use some of that material in art projects in the future!
Activity 5
Be kind to others, smiles go a long way. Tell someone in your family that you love them. You can even play with your little sister or brother for a bit today.

Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller
Math Connections:
Count how many plastic bottles you and your family pick up. Who knew there’d so much out on the ground?
Real-World Connections:
There are many organizations that have community clean up days! Research to find some in your area.
When donating, look for item specific organizations. There may be some out there that are looking for toys specifically or some that will take a wide variety of items.
