STREAM Activity: Umbrella Counting
It's raining numbers!
Activity best for children ages 4 and up
Counting can be a challenge for many young friends. In today’s blog post, let’s create a fun and simple way to practice counting.
Materials:
Paper
Scissors
Sharpie
Pipe cleaners
Tape
Beads
Guiding Questions:
Can you spot numbers around you? Maybe on clocks or doors?
Can you think of a fun song or rhyme that involves counting?
Directions
Step 1
Start by gathering your materials for your umbrella counting!
Step 2
Start by drawing your umbrellas on a piece of paper. You will first want to draw a half circle for the top of the umbrella. Then, add tiny little rainbow shapes to finish the bottom of the umbrella.
Note: In this activity, we created numbers 1 – 10, but you can create as many as you would like to practice with!
Step 3
Now, cut out your umbrellas. Once you have cut them out, you can write a number on them.
Step 4
Next, cut pipe cleaners in half to create the handle of your umbrella. Loop up the tail and tape it to the back of your umbrella.
Step 5
Once you have taped all the umbrella pieces together, your activity is ready to go! With your little one, take the beads and add them on to match the number on the umbrella. This basic activity will help with fine motor skills as well as help them with number recognition!
