Art Activity: “Stained Glass” Inspired by James Hubbell
Let's make stained glass artwork inspired by nature and James Hubbell!
Activity best for children age 2 and up
James Hubbell is a visual artist best known for his stained glass art. He grew up loving animals and the wide open landscape of the West, which gave him inspiration for his work. He uses his property to hold art classes and train new artists today. One of the most beautiful things you will see at his studio are all the stained glass windows which remind you of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets you see in the mountains! Mr. Hubbell and other local artists teach people stained glass, sculpture and all manner of art techniques there.
Now it’s your turn to design “stained glass” of your own! Let’s gather our materials and get started!
Materials You’ll Need:
“Dollar Store” clear contact paper shelf liner
“Dollar Store” package of tissue paper in red, blue, yellow and other bright colors
Scissors
Pipe cleaners or string (optional)
Directions
STEP 1
Gather your materials! Inexpensive clear contact paper makes a wonderful stained glass background and is easy to cut out.
Other objects such as yarn and tissue paper are great materials to use as is opaque objects such as leaves.
STEP 2
Draw your creature or scene on the top of the contact paper with a water based marker. You can add color that will show through with markers or use it as an outline.
STEP 3
Flip over and lay out yarn, papers and other materials you want in your stained glass. Help your child place a new layer of contact paper to sandwich over the top. Press hard with hands and a book!
STEP 4
Cutting out your stained glass is optional! Hang in a window and watch the papers glow and colors mix.
