Create your own figurative sculpture!

Make a figurative sculpture inspired by Sokari Douglas Camp! Sokari Douglas Camp was born in 1958 in Buguma, Nigeria. She left Nigeria as a girl to live in London, England after her guardian sister died and war broke out in Nigeria. She goes back to see her Kalabari relatives often in Nigeria, loving what is valued in her native country: family and tradition.

Materials you’ll need:

Aluminum foil

Recycled plastic bottles (bottles with a wider opening is best)

Tape (clear, colored, or masking)

Repurposed torn papers (you can use any scraps you have such as wrapping paper, magazines, napkins, etc.)

Directions

STEP 1
Tear off a piece of aluminum foil twice the height of your bottle and roll it into a long tube.

STEP 2
Fold your foil tube into a “ V” shape and push it into your bottle about an inch. Fold either end down to create arms and shoulders.

STEP 3
Use another piece of foil to create an egg-shaped ball. This will be the head! Use your fingers to add details like a mouth, nose, or eyes.

STEP 4
Tear pieces of repurposed paper into triangular sections for clothing. Tape the pieces onto the plastic bottle making sure to go all around the figure. Finish with ribbons, pipe cleaners, and paper cups for hats and jewelry.
