Daily STREAM Activity: Edible Snowflake
An edible snowflake that's yummy and won't melt!
Activity best for children age 2 and up
Snowflakes in August? How about making a snowflake that won’t melt in your hand but is super tasty to eat!
First, let’s learn about snow. Snow is made up of ice crystals (frozen liquid water) that falls from a cloud. Snowflakes have a large variety of shapes and designs and no two snowflakes in nature are the same. The size of a snowflake depends on how many ice crystals connect. Each snowflake is made up of about 200 ice crystals! Snowflakes have six sides. Snow is not actually white, but clear. Snow looks white because of the way the light reflects off the ice crystals.
Now that we know a little bit about snow and snowflakes it is time to make a tasty treat.
Materials you’ll need:
2 flour tortillas
Shredded cheese
Frying pan
Clean scissors to cut the tortillas
Questions to answer while experimenting:
What would real snowflakes taste like?
How would they feel on your tongue or on your hand?
Are all snowflakes the same?
What are snowflakes made of?
Directions
STEP 1
Take two flour tortillas and place them on a plate. Have a grown-up heat up one tortilla in a frying pan. You can also do this in a microwave.
STEP 2
Place your favorite shredded cheese on the warm tortilla. Place the second tortilla on top of the cheese. Warm the tortillas until the cheese has melted.
STEP 3
Place the tortillas with the melted cheese back on the plate. When it is safe to touch the tortillas, fold it in half, and use scissors to cut out shapes from the middle and edges.
STEP 4
Open up the tortilla and see the cool design you made with the scissors before you eat your tasty snowflake! Don’t forget to also eat the pieces you cut out!
