STREAM Activity: National Crayon Day
Create a colorful masterpiece!
Activity best for children ages 3 and up
Did you know March 31st is National Crayon Day? The day is celebrated to honor the colorful and creative tools that have been a staple of childhood artistry for generations. Today, let’s turn on our creative minds and create a rainbow handprint that looks like a box of crayons.

Vocabulary:
Artistry: Making things with your hands and imagination.
Imagination: The ability to picture something in your mind that is not real.
Creative: Using your imagination or ideas to create something.
Materials:
Paint (green & yellow for the box, any color for the crayons)
Cup with water
Paper towels
Wipes
Paintbrush
Construction paper (any color)
Paper plate
Butcher paper or paper towels (This will be used to prevent paint from getting on the table)
Guiding Questions:
What is your favorite color?
How do you use your imagination to create art?
Directions
Step 1
Start by gathering the materials for your crayon box handprint.

Step 2
Now let’s set up your workstation! Place paper towels or butcher paper on the table to prevent any accidents. Now add your paint colors to a paper plate.

Step 3
Next, start by dipping the brush in the paint and gently brush each finger with a different color. These will be the crayons in your crayon box. As you’re doing this, make sure to wash your brush in between each color so they don’t mix. For the box portion of this handprint, you will paint the bottom half of your hand yellow and add two green diagonals for the detail lines. Continue this until your whole hand is covered in paint.

Step 4
Now that your hand is covered in paint, you will grab a piece of paper and handprint your hand on the paper to reveal your own crayon box.

Step 5
If you notice that not all the paint from your hand is transferred to your paper, you can go back with a paintbrush and color in the spots that are missing color.

Step 6
Now you have a beautiful handprint box of crayons that you can display around your house to celebrate National Crayon Day!
